In the middle of the night I hear the dreaded knock at my door Pretend I can’t hear then I hear it once more Frozen in fear I study the floor It was a plea for help I had never felt so ashamed I just ignored it and it went away It was 3 in the AM, New Year’s Day I roused myself Late in the morning and walked down the stairs Saw him at breakfast with vom in his hair I’m a good liar with time to prepare Anaesthetise me in the needs of the day The busy mind, the averted eye I vacate the scene Pack up my bags and get a ride home Sure you can drive while you look at your phone Can’t take my eyes off the littoral zone Back home on the hill I feel sick when I’m coming on strong Don’t feel right though I know I’m not wrong Takes all my might just to push it along Anaesthetise me... Out there in the sea Horizon can’t hide the truth from me Everywhere I look is a wound Someone’s gonna bleed out soon Right there at my feet Anaesthetise me... Kicking goals Kicking goals Kicking goals, I found forgetfulness Kicking goals Kicking goals Kicking goals, thanks to my Averted eye

Time to Fall 03:29
High enough and now it’s time to fall Got high enough and now it’s time to fall I’m high enough and now it’s time to Drop the ball Into the gutter down the drain with the rain And slow my roll Bob down the creek till I’m caught in the trees again Out of the thin air back to my regular place Got my thumb on the pulse and the pulse can wait What a stumbler Born fumbler The idlest of them all Got high enough and now it’s time to fall High enough and now it’s time to fall I’m high enough and now it’s time to fall High enough and now it’s time to Treat myself To the thickening atmosphere To release myself Bring the bar right down here It’s a return To the earth A dive A birth What a plodder Carpet fodder Just lay me down the hall High enough…

Stranger 05:55
I left myself behind at the station I saw me slide away and look forlorn I pressed my forehead to the humming window The train rose above the tracks, we glid toward oblivion Later on the mattress in the attic I could taste the city on my tongue I never had a conscience so erratic That I couldn’t turn my face towards the sun Dead trees on the hill Dead skin on my windowsill Dead ahead Stranger in my bed looks just like me I left myself behind at the station I saw me put my bag up on the rack I saw me call my mum and ask for mercy I saw the shadow on my back, plain as day to everyone I was lucky but I put the work in I was ready to catch it when it fell Always training standing ‘neath the window It would never cross my mind to ask for help Dead trees… I left myself behind at the station I hid me in a corner of my mind I just feel so grateful for my patience When I know I could be waiting all my life Dead trees...

Neighbour’s kid Toddling in To our lives in the midst Of a cataclysm You learn so fast And you smile so soon As you open the gate and Say all our names again Whence my love? Your joy You’ve got us We're yours You’ve shot us through with love Whence my love? You are not my child Just a break in the mist Of our solipsism Whence this love That could glow so warm That could dapple the shade and Make all our days again Whence my love? Your joy... Maybe I’ll never have a baby Maybe it’ll make me cry sometime Part of the deal of being alive Is to miss out on Nearly everything Part of the deal of being human Is to know it Your joy...

Awake, I’m dreaming Awake, I’m dreaming Awake, I’m dreaming I could be like you I’ve had too much time sweating my thoughts out Yes, I’m lying Yes I’m lying just as still as you What’s the use? I wanna die But just for a little while I wanna feel Real and alive in the morning Stretching and yawning like a street dog in the sun Racing, chasing Awake, I’m circling around the drain The sleep world snores, slack-jawed And peaceful, so peaceful Feckless, defenceless, snuffling dopes Life could be simple If I could die… If I could feel… Leaking pen Be my friend Help me sort my Thoughts again I Don’t know what I’d do Without you I wanna die, but just for a little while I wanna feel Real and alive in the morning, stretching scratching yawning like a street dog I wanna die, but just for a little while Just for a little while Please, let me go

about

‘Kicking Goals’ is 2022 second EP from Cabbage Moth, following the release of ‘Pack Your Bags’ earlier in the year. The EP ranges from the sunny, fast-paced ‘Whence My Love’ to the sax-led slow burn of ‘Stranger’. Lead single ‘Awake, I’m Dreaming’ moves from a reverb-soaked soundscape to a building acoustic guitar meditation on insomnia. The tracks were recorded and mixed by Tim Harvey (Jade Imagine) and feature harmonies from Ellie Ware (True Salt).
