Cracked Bell 04:03
Just a frail voice singing, a cracked bell ringing I’m sure no-one is listening Worn out hoping Those doors will open I’m studying the wall It’s thick and tall What’s on the other side? Another wall, twice as high A frail voice singing, a cracked bell ringing I’m sure no-one is listening The howl is in their ears A frail voice singing, a cracked bell ringing I’m sure no-one is listening Worn out preaching Who am I reaching? The world is changing The future unwritten I could lounge against the wall I could get so comfortable A frail voice singing, a cracked bell ringing It feels like no-one’s listening The howl is in their ears A frail voice singing, a cracked bell ringing It feels like no-one’s listening We’re always moving, never arriving Celebrating, while we’re fighting Stick together in the shifting weather Celebrating, while we’re fighting A frail voice singing, a cracked bell ringing Don’t know if no-one’s listening Who knows who’ll one day hear? Small choir humming, old guitar strumming Don’t know if no-one’s listening A frail voice singing, a cracked bell ringing Don’t know if someone’s listening

Let me paint a picture Let me fall upon it like hail Doctor pulls the stitches And I fall apart, and I set sail Pool of orange light Sticking to the darkness like a friend Beneath me in the night Beneath starlight, and an ice wind Everything Is packing it in Pack your bags We’re heading back to the beginning Let us in the building Where the floor is lit up like a stage Full of writhing children And the hail stones, and the last page Everything… Watch me from your window Take a picture of the smoking trail Drifting on the wind, going home Choking slowly on my own tail

Seep 03:18
Creek swells She sells Me spells Slick skins Of winged things Like bells ring In the wind Going na na na na na…. Red wound Spread soon Head swooned She said bring this Long list With a song hissed At the moon Like na na na na na I seep through the cracks In your leathery skin You can’t help but let me in I seep through the cracks I’m under your skin You can’t help it Na na na na na… Na na na na na….

Are you even ready? I need to polish up my CV The lords of the land want their money Who else will keep them in AC If not you and me? Application, rejection Didn’t we say, didn’t we say We’d keep it casual anyway? Application, rejection No strings, no benefits for life Don’t you feel free? Are you trying to tell me you crave stability? Don’t you feel the frisson, don’t you feel the thrill Edge-of-your-seat for the next bill Or ‘the position has been filled’ Application, rejection Didn’t we say, didn’t we say We’d keep it casual anyway? Application, rejection No strings, no benefits for life

What A Mess 02:54
Let me burn your bridges Let me hold my hands to the flame Hazy figures In a charred frame It was a mess while it lasted Living in the rush of passing trains Ever faster Never take pains The sun is up The world is steaming Out the door you hear Somebody screaming Shut it down You must be dreaming You must be dreaming Came in swinging scissors Trying to snip the blisters from my palm Mirrored vision And a strange calm It was a mess getting past it Trying to blink the visions from our eyes What a bastard What a surprise You seep through the cracks In my leathery skin I can’t help but let you in You seep through the cracks You’re under my skin I can’t help it

Are our leaders Too old, or too dumb To be scared of what’s to come? I’m scared shitless When I sit down and read about it We get together, write letters and we shout it Feels good to fight Knuckles tight around our hope Throat stinging from the smoke Oceans lapping at our toes I’m scared shitless

about

‘Pack Your Bags’ is the debut EP from Melbourne/Naarm artist Cabbage Moth. Cabbage Moth is a new project from Hamish Macrae, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist previously of Mac Springs. The EP was written while lockdowns made band-life difficult, performed by Hamish, and recorded at home and with Tim Harvey (Jade Imagine) when restrictions permitted. It was inspired by learning to fingerpick, playing a housemate’s three-stringed bass, listening to Kate Bush and the Beach Boys, and riding the slow rollercoaster of pandemic life.
The single and lead-off track, ‘Cracked Bell’, is a rocker inspired by writer and activist Rebecca Solnit’s work, that wonders how to get beyond feelings of hopelessness to action. The rest of the EP wanders through the dark folk of ‘Seep’, the underemployment jam ‘Application Rejection’, and finishes with the stark ‘Scared Shitless’.
